Under general direction, performs a variety of routine and complex public safety work in the administration of the police department as Crime Analyst; provides responsible technical and administrative support to the Chief of Police or designee.
Performs a variety of highly specialized technical assignments in support of the City's law enforcement activities; provides crime and criminal intelligence research and analysis in order to project crime trends, linkages, and recommends deployment strategies; disseminates criminal intelligence information provided by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies relative to general criminal activities and specific criminal investigations; and performs related work as required.
This position demands a high level of discretion, integrity, and dedication to public safety. As Crime Analyst, efforts will be pivotal in reducing the impact of illegal drugs on communities and enhancing overall public health and safety. Conducts research and analysis of criminal justice information, including criminal patterns and trends in support of Investigation Division.
Performs statistical and analytical research of crime and intelligence data and provides recommendations to departmental personnel.
Uses general and specialized computer applications in order to gather and analyze crime and intelligence data for crime pattern detection, suspect-crime correlations, target-suspect profiles, and crime forecasting.
Reviews, interprets, categorizes, and enters information in databases, creates reports, charts, graphs, and other means of conveying relevant and detailed information clearly and accurately.
Extract data and develop a variety of standards and customized reports, charts, graphs, and maps.
Conducts resource allocation studies for the purposes of deployment and scheduling.
Participates in crime research and analysis activities with other local, state and federal agencies and disseminates findings to departmental personnel.
Develops and maintains liaisons with other criminal justice and law enforcement agencies.
Accesses, enters and/or deletes information in local, state, and federal computer systems including Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Department of Justice (DOJ), Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) and New World System.
Exports, manipulates, and analyzes records in several software programs; maintains accurate recordkeeping for officer status, premise information, emergency business information, schedules and filed interrogations (addresses, property location).
Accesses sensitive criminal history, employee confidential information and numerous other types of information from internal and external computer data bases, including sex and drug registration; analyzes trends and information and presents findings to department personnel.
Attends law enforcement meetings for crime information exchange and crime analysis techniques.
Provides technical support for Investigation Division information systems software.
Maintains current information sheets, crime information bulletins and prints when necessary for upcoming shifts.
Prepares wanted or informational bulletins from crime reports and distributes within the Police Department.
Maintains security, integrity, and accuracy of police records.
Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to his/her supervisor.
Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Sufficient experience and education to demonstrate the knowledge and skills listed and to perform the essential duties is required. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is:
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Successful completion of fifteen (15) semester units from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, law enforcement, police science, public or business administration or a related field.
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience involving data analysis and evaluation for the implementation of programs in the criminal, behavioral or social science fields.
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
Possession of a Department of Justice Crime and Intelligence Analysis Certificate or completion of California POST-certified coursework in crime analysis is highly desired.
Other Requirements:
Must be age 21 by date of appointment.
Must be willing to work various shifts and holidays.
Must not have been convicted of any misdemeanor or felony in this state or any other state or federal jurisdiction which carries a penalty of prohibiting ownership, possession, or control of a firearm (12021 (c) PC).
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
