What you will do
The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist will be responsible for the implementation of the plant environmental management system which includes compliance with applicable regulations, promoting pollution prevention and waste reduction, training employees and the overall reduction of the plant’s impact on the environment; reducing work related injuries by continuously improving the safety management system and leading cultural change by demonstrating exceptional leadership and engaging employees on all levels; and, the implementation of safety programs, employee training, compliance monitoring, maintaining reporting mechanisms and management of accidents, property losses and workers compensation.

How you will do it
Evaluate the safety management system for its effectiveness and maintaining documented continuous improvement plans to improve performance.
Engage the entire work force both salary and hourly to drive cultural change and accomplishing safety performance objectives and targets.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulatory requirements and JCI corporate safety systems and act as the lead contact with regulatory agencies.
Perform incident investigations using a formal process with the focus on root cause, corrective and preventive actions and verification.
Provide effective training for all safety programs including but not limited to lockout/tagout, machine guarding, fall protection, powered industrial vehicle, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, electrical safety, confined space, respiratory protection and walking and working surfaces.
Develop and implement motivational and incentive programs that promote a high degree of safety awareness and enthusiasm.
Establish, record and track safety performance metrics, both leading and lagging indicators.
Ensure that behavior-based observation programs are effectively implemented and tracked.
Perform or ensure compliance with industrial hygiene testing and other requirements.
Review planned changes and new equipment installations prior to receipt. Approve or recommend changes in manufacturing and engineering matters of plant layout, location/relocation of machinery, equipment, facilities, safety designs and processes.
Train all new employees concerning plant safety rules and guidelines. Work with management in a joint effort to provide the worker with a safe attitude, safe surroundings and safe equipment.
Assist in managing workers compensation and reducing costs by working closely with insurance carriers, JCI workers compensation manager, attorneys and state authorities along with in-house supervisors and managers. Manage each claim from the accident report to the return of the worker for modified duty and ultimately to claim closure.
Help implement the corporate environmental management system. Collect environmental data for use in determining root-causes of compliance problems and pollution prevention opportunities. Implement proactive corrective steps.
Complete and submit applicable environmental reports in a timely fashion (such as Tier II, TRI Form R, Generator’s Residual Waste, Waste-Water Self-Monitoring, and Air Emissions Inventory).
Record and maintain spreadsheets containing all paint booth, fin press and parts washer chemical usage and air emissions.
Assist with the administration, implementation and compliance with the ISO14001 and 45001 EHS Management System (acts as the plant management representative).
Oversee hazardous and non-hazardous waste program including ensuring the correct handling, packaging, labeling, storage and transportation of waste to approved treatment and/or disposal facilities.
Coordinate air emission, wastewater, storm water and waste testing.
Present safety and environmental training programs to workers and supervisors. Some standardized materials will be made available and development of site-specific training materials will be required.
Drive Safety Performance in the plant.

What we look for
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety, Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science.
Completion of EHS internship(s) during undergraduate program.
Must be willing to work 1st shift as well as occasional off-shift work hours.
Strong technical and analytical skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management, regulators and governmental agencies.
Ability to describe EHS regulatory requirements to a diverse workforce.
Ability to work independently to manage workload and prioritize tasks.
Demonstrated strong organizational and administrative skills.
Preferred:
Working knowledge and experience with SafeStart, STOP or other behavior-based safety program.
Specialized safety training and certification from a recognized institute (CSP or CHMM).
