Environmental Scientist 1 - Primary Responsibilitie

HDR is looking for an Environmental Scientist 1 to support power and utility clients in environmental permitting and compliance. This role is focused on developing construction stormwater management plan (SWMP or SWPPP) drawings, reports, and permit applications. There is opportunity to support environmental permitting, planning, and compliance efforts related to Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, Floodplain Permit development, National Environmental Policy Act, and local land use permitting.

Initial job responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing local, State, and Federal regulations for applicability to projects
  • Performing site visits,
  • Developing stormwater management plan report narratives,
  • Working alongside CAD/GIS staff to develop stormwater management site plans, and
  • Supporting project compliance through construction (reviewing inspection reports, revising stormwater reports/maps to fit changing needs).

Candidate would be responsible for:

  • Maintaining quality of deliverables under tight deadlines,
  • Accommodating changing project schedules and scopes - shifting attention as needed,
  • Managing tasks between competing project interests, and
  • Tracking workload with support of supervisor and project managers.

Role will evolve through training to include direct coordination with clients, subcontractors, approving agencies, and other stakeholders to determine permitting needs and track project status and deliverables. The candidate would work with an experienced team including other environmental scientists and project managers of varying experience and backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience.
  • Experience in GIS or CAD drafting beneficial.
  • Experience/knowledge of regulations pertaining to CDPS Stormwater Construction General Permit.
  • Experience in permitting or agency review processes a plus.
  • Experience on active construction sites useful.
  • In -state experience a plus.
  • Ability to clearly communicate with client and agencies verbally and in written format.
  • Ability to track, report, assess, and determine where information is in conflict or inadequate and resolve such issues.
  • Ability to understand hydrology across disturbed landscape, read topographic maps, and visualize erosion and sediment transport.
  • Ability to effectively communicate over phone, email, or messaging platforms.
  • Self-motivated, ableto work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to safely drive around the State either in personal car or Company rental is a must. A valid Colorado driver's license is required.
  • Demonstrate strong technical writing and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work in fast-paced work environment with changing deadlines and priorities.
  • Demonstrate commitment to safety and quality.

Team members are currently work from Fort Collins, Denver, and remote locations along the front range and western slope of Colorado. Preferably the candidate would be out of the Fort Collins office but open to Englewood or Denver as well. Flexibility on number of days in the office and working remotely is expected, with the assumption that the candidate would be in office 2-3 days per week to facilitate training and skill development. Long-term remote vs in office time is negotiable and will be based on past experience and level of training required. Our team encourages a healthy work-life balance that focuses on quality of service to our clients and participation in recurrent meetings while allowing for flexibility in work schedules. Field work is roughly 3-4 site visits per month throughout the state for design, pre-construction kickoffs, and post-construction verification visits. This is for a full-time (40-hour per week) or part-time (min 30-hours per week) position.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences or closely related field
  • Knowledge of wetland delineation, field investigation techniques, and agency coordination requirements
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • MS Office experience
