Paralegal
The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division. The position filled through this announcement will work in the Envionmental and Natural Resources section of the Regulated Industries and Professions Division of the Department of Law.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Department of Law Paralegals provide administrative, transactional, litigation and research support to attorneys.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary duties include, but are not limited to:
* Assists with case evaluations by obtaining additional information or evidence from clients and witnesses.
* Prepares cases for hearings by organizing files, communicating with clients and witnesses regarding logistics, interviewing and subpoenaing witnesses, and preparing exhibits.
* Performs legal research as directed by attorneys including analyzing rules, regulations, case law, and statutory law.
* Drafts correspondence and legal documents such as case initiation forms, legal memoranda, and discovery responses.
* Pulls court documents from dockets; e-files pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents with various Georgia and federal courts through online court systems.
* Proofreads and cite checks legal motions and briefs.
* Serves as communication liaison between the division and respondents, attorneys, courts, and clients.
* Responds to inquiries received from clients and the general public.
* Maintains, organizes, and manages case records, including up to date information on case status and upcoming deadlines.
* Attends/assists attorneys with hearings and client meetings.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Paralegal Certificate, Diploma or Degree AND one year of paralegal experience OR an associate's degree (non-paralegal) AND 2 years of documented paralegal experience; OR three (3) years of documented paralegal experience AND demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office including Microsoft Word.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Certified Paralegal (CP) or Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) certification recognized by the ABA or Georgia State Bar, and three years of paralegal experience
* Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
* Current commission as a notary public and/or willingness to obtain notary public commission
* Strong organizational skills
* Strong written and verbal communications skills

A criminal background check is completed on all candidates; employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation. Candidates strongly considered for the position will also be required to submit a Department of Law employment application and waiver and acuire a Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Clearance letter. The chosen candidates witll be asked supply College Transcripts.
