A growing national law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Prosecution Attorney with a PhD in Life Sciences to join its Intellectual Property group. This position offers an opportunity to work with cutting-edge scientific inventions in diverse areas such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Biosensors, Medical Devices, and Metallurgy. The firm’s IP group is recognized for its excellence, and the successful candidate will have the chance to lead patent prosecution, contribute to due diligence, and mentor junior associates. Location Charlotte, NC Duties Analyze and evaluate scientific inventions across various technologies. Draft and prosecute patent applications, ensuring compliance with patent laws and regulations. Collaborate with inventors and colleagues to translate complex scientific concepts into clear patent documents. Respond to Office Actions and prepare responses to address rejections and objections. Conduct novelty assessments and freedom-to-operate opinions. Perform due diligence in patent portfolios and assist in transactional matters. Mentor and provide guidance to junior associates. Stay up-to-date with scientific advancements and their implications on patent law. Requirements Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal degree. PhD in a life sciences discipline such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Biosensors, Medicine, Medical Devices, or Metallurgy. Minimum of 5 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution. Active registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and in good standing. Admission to at least one U.S. jurisdiction and in good standing. Strong scientific/technical ability and excellent patent drafting skills. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. A collaborative team player with a desire to grow professionally. Education PhD in a life sciences discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Biochemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Biosensors, Medicine, Medical Devices, Metallurgy). Certifications Registered and in good standing with the USPTO. Admitted to and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Skills Excellent patent prosecution skills with significant experience in drafting and filing patents. Expertise in analyzing and interpreting complex scientific data. Ability to collaborate with clients and inventors to translate scientific inventions into patentable technologies. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
