The Department of Molecular and Cellular Oncology (MCO) advances basic, translational and clinical efforts to make MD Anderson the number one cancer research center.
The department's oncology-driven research focuses on fundamental mechanistic discoveries and their translation to humans. As a basic science department at MD Anderson, the department strives to enhance basic research excellence by establishing a robust research group focused on the molecular and cellular aspects of cancer research, particularly in signaling pathways and crosstalk between tumor and tumor microenvironment in tumor initiation, progression and metastasis, and resistance to various therapies. The department also hosts MD Anderson's Functional Genomics Core with the support of the Cancer Center Supporting Grant (CCSG). In addition, departmental faculty are core members of the Cancer Biology and Metastasis Program of CCSG, rated "exceptional" in the last competing renewal.
MOLECULAR & CELLULAR ONCOLOGY
KEY FUNCTIONS Conducts Research Experiments and Projects - Conduct research projects with supervision; may include procurement and processing blood, isolating DNA/RNA, PCR/QPCR, preform biospecimen assays.
- D iscuss projects stages and present findings in lab meetings.
- Prepare final reports and submit to PI for publications, grants or protocols.
- Show willingness to learn and help others implement new techniques.
Operates Laboratory Apparatus and Equipment - L earns equipment and relevant software needed to carry out experiments and general laboratory maintaining/cleaning.
Data Gathering and Analysis - Use computer software efficiently for accurate data acquisition, statistical analysis, reporting and presentation.
- Accurately records and evaluates data in accordance with methods requested.
- Maintain inventories, keeping precise, timely and accurate records.
Statistical Data Analysis Duties - Working in collaboration with the team, will gather, process, and analyze data, utilizing statistical tools and visualization techniques to provide actionable insights, and problem solving to support research projects in the lab.
- This may include manipulating and processing large datasets (i.e. data cleaning, data preparation, data storage) before conducting various statistical analyses (e.g. in Excel and R) and maintaining the accuracy and quality of data.
- Be able to communicate analysis results using data visualization, reports and presentations.
EDUCATION Required: Bachelor's degree, major course work in one of the basic sciences.
EXPERIENCE Required: No experience.
