Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Teaching Assistant to join our team in serving academically low-performing students in grades Pre-K through 5th at several elementary schools in Southern Maine, including Biddeford, Portland, and Saco. Our program offers hands-on engineering design challenges that incorporate literacy, math, and social-emotional learning, helping students build essential skills for school success, such as academic confidence, initiative, problem-solving, communication, and perseverance. Students are identified collaboratively by program directors, site coordinators, and school staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist teachers and the Site Coordinator in delivering a 4-day program focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), along with enrichment activities in health/wellness, culture, and social-emotional learning.
Support instruction under the guidance of site directors while adhering to all safety and health guidelines.
Foster a physically and emotionally safe, structured, and organized learning environment.
Build positive relationships with students, actively supporting, modeling, and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices—personal, social, and academic.
Help manage student behavior challenges as needed and reinforce clear, consistent, and positive expectations for learning and behavior.
Utilize best practices to achieve grant goals and reflect the program's mission.
Participate in weekly team meetings to discuss program delivery, needs, reflections, and goals for improvement.
Attend required professional development training to enhance skills and knowledge.
Monitor and respond to communications via the program's email account and other platforms in a timely manner, collaborating with directors, coordinators, and team members.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Site Coordinator or directors.
Maintain professionalism at all times, adhering to program expectations, online safety, and learning guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

State of Maine Ed Tech Certification or demonstrated experience and ability in a relevant field.
Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in Education or a related field is preferred.

Work Experience & Skills:

Experience working with youth, especially elementary-aged students, is preferred.
Enthusiasm for learning and a passion for inspiring the same in children.
Experience working with diverse communities and low-performing populations is preferred; experience with English Language Learners is a plus for certain sites.
Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
Proficiency in various technology tools, including Microsoft Outlook, Google Drive Suite, and Zoom.
Flexibility, thoughtfulness, and a creative approach to problem-solving.
A growth mindset and a willingness to learn and implement innovative learning strategies.
Ability to collaborate effectively within a team setting.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We value the leadership of people of color and LGBTQ individuals, and we strongly encourage applicants from all traditionally marginalized identities to apply. We do not discriminate based on race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, religion, national origin, disability, ancestry, marital status, veteran status, medical condition, or any other protected category under local, state, or federal laws.
